ULTRASOUND OF A SINGLE ABDOMINAL ORGAN

Abdominal ultrasonography is characterized by its non-invasive nature, minimized discomfort for the patient, and absence of ionizing radiation. This diagnostic method focuses on visualizing organs located within the abdominal cavity, including the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, aorta, and retroperitoneum. It’s essential to note that the standard abdominal ultrasound does not typically cover the intestines and appendix structures.

Indications for abdominal ultrasonography include situations where the patient experiences abdominal pain of various localizations, digestive issues, bloating, elevated liver or kidney tests. The method is also utilized for diagnosing newly discovered hypertension, anemia, palpable organ enlargements, suspicion of cyst or tumor presence, and kidney diseases.

The examination is indicated in the following situations:

  • Abdominal pain of various localizations
  • Increased gas/bloating
  • Heaviness sensation in the right upper quadrant
  • Digestive problems: belching, heartburn, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, decreased appetite, weight loss or gain
  • Skin issues on the face or body (rashes, redness, telangiectasias, itching)
  • Suspicion of benign or malignant tumors
  • Chronic digestive system diseases
  • Following abdominal trauma
  • Pre-operative and post-operative preparation

Before the examination, patients are advised to minimize the intake of foods that might cause bloating. Those suffering from excessive gas should consider taking medication to reduce it. For morning exams, fasting from midnight is required, except for water and medication. In the afternoon, light, non-gas-forming breakfasts can be consumed, while only plain water is allowed before the examination. If the examination involves the pelvic organs, drinking 5-7 deciliters of water an hour before is recommended to fill the bladder.

The duration of the examination usually ranges between 15 and 20 minutes.
