URINARY TRACT ULTRASOUND

This ultrasonographic examination of the urinary and reproductive tracts focuses on a detailed evaluation of the kidneys, urinary bladder, and ureters’ condition.

Ultrasonography of the urinary system allows the detection of the following aspects:

  • Dimensions of the urinary bladder and kidneys, together with the diameter of the ureters.
  • Presence of renal stones and neoplasms in the kidney and bladder region.
  • Integrity of the urinary bladder walls, along with structural anomalies.
  • Detection of residual urine in the bladder after complete voiding.
  • Characterization of the kidney tissue structure and thickness.
  • Identification of abnormalities in the development of the urinary system organs.

Preparation for the ultrasound examination of the kidneys and bladder is essential for achieving optimal visualization and an accurate diagnostic image. For this reason, it is advised that the patient consumes at least 1.5 liters of non-carbonated water at least an hour before the examination to fill the bladder. If the ultrasound is solely of the kidneys, no hydration regimen is needed. A day before the examination, the consumption of spicy, salty, and fatty foods should be avoided. Consideration of the preparation before the examination is essential when scheduling the diagnostic appointment.

It’s essential to note that a comprehensive ultrasonography of the urinary system is performed in two phases – first with a filled bladder and then with an emptied one. For this reason, thorough preparation is necessary: patients should abstain from voiding for at least 2-3 hours before the examination and drink one liter of non-carbonated water approximately an hour before the procedure.
